1979-81 "원고지"와 "얼굴" 작품을 할 무렵은 대학원 다닐 때이다. 생성과 소멸이라는 거창한 주제에 사로잡혔었던 것은 이 세상에는 절대성이란 없으며 있다면 '생성'과 '소멸'의 법칙 뿐이라고, 나름대로 생각하며 작품을 풀어 나갔었다. 원고지 몇 장을 택해서 사이사이에 먹지를 끼워 놓고 구별이 가도록 파란 볼펜으로 칠해 나갔다. 순환하는 동안 처음 흔적은 차츰 소멸해 나간다는 것을 보여주고는 주제를 잘 다룬 줄 알고 있었다.
"얼굴"도 같은 맥락에서 출발했다. 실제 얼굴에 기름을 묻혀서 먹을 입혀 나갔다. 처음 칠한 기름이 계속 닦여 나가면서 먹이 입혀지는 톤에 차이가 나면서 표현에 우연한 맛을 더해 주었다.
"동네 한바퀴"는 결혼 후 첫 작품이다. 시댁 동네 한바퀴를 스무 발자국 씩 사진을 찍어 나가다보니 우연히, 거짓말처럼 100커트가 되었다. 그것을 복사하여 빨간 색연필로 사물이 다가왔다가 사라지는 과정을 강조해 보았다. 여전히 '생성과 소멸'이 주제이다.
1986-87 "새"와 "구름" 씨리즈
일상생활에 억매이며-그 중요성을 알기 때문에 더더욱- 여유로움이란 영원히 찾아 오지 않을 것같은 답답함 때문인지 이 무렵에는 어떤 형상을 봐도 "새"나 "구름"의 모습을 느끼게 되었다. 지금은 새들에 대해서 조금은 달리 생각한다. 우리가 보고 있듯이 그들의 활공은 그렇게 자유럽지도 여유롭지도 않다고... 그들도 생존의 법칙과 질서에 따라 순간순간을 절실하게 살아나가고 있다고...
The series of 'The Birds' and 'Clouds' 1986-87
At that times I was so busy because of ordinary life and teaching, and I had watched the shapes of birds and clouds through all kinds of things arround me, possibly I wanted to be free and to take a rest. But my thought about the birds has been changed. They are not so free as we are thinking. They also live serious lives for their existences by their own ways.
1979-81 I was a student in Graduate School, when I made works "the Manuscript Papers" and "the Face". At that times the theme of the works is 'a creation and a extinction". I thought this was the only truth in this would, cannot be denied. Then I selected some sheets of manuscript papers and put carbon papers in every sheet of them. During the cycle the earlier traces became disappear. I thought I had represent this theme successfully.
"The Face" was made in the same theme. I put oil on real face partly, and pressed with Korean paper ,and painted Korean ink. During the cycle the earlier oil became disappear, and ink was darker. "Walking in circle" was the first work after marriage. In every 20 steps walking in circle around my town,I took pictures. Unbelievably just 100 cuts were taken. I made copies by xerox and draw some lines in red to clear something approaching and disappearing.
